Gaming platform Steam is prohibiting games that use blockchain technology or let users exchange NFTs or cryptocurrencies.

"Applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs" is a rule and guideline added on Valve’s Onboarding “What you shouldn’t publish on Steam” list.

Age of Rust, a NFT and blockchain based game, was recently removed off the Steam platform following the addition of the new rule. Age of Rust's twitter account tweeted their disappointment in Steam's decision because "they don't allow items that can have real-world value on their platform. While I respect their choice, I fundamentally believe that NFTs and blockchain games are the future."

Another upcoming blockchain-based game My Neighbor Alice coincidentally decided to announce that it has also chosen to develop their own game launcher stating it was not in response to Steam's ban on NFT games.

This is a setback for gaming developers in the expanding play-to-earn crypto market as Steam is the largest digital distribution platform for PC gaming. Positive news came through for the crypto gaming market as Steam's competitor, Epic Games, chimed in on the topic.

Epic Games CEO & Founder Tim Sweeney has responded on twitter stating that they will welcome games built with blockchain technology provided they "follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are age-rated by an appropriate group."
