If you have been buying cryptocurrencies on our favorite exchanges and your holdings have increased generously, it may be worth while to transfer your cryptos to a hardware wallet such as the Ledger Nano X if you plan on holding for the long-term. Hardware wallets significantly improve the security of your cryptocurrencies as you own the private keys instead of keeping them on an exchange (some have been hacked in the past!). Hardware wallets also provide better security over software wallets as your keys are stored in a physical device, which transactions are signed offline, making them less vulnerable to viruses, security holes, and hackers than software wallets. If you are ready to invest in a hardware wallet, follow this how-to guide as we step through from purchase to setting up a Ledger Nano X - the most trusted and leading hardware wallet in the market.
Purchasing a Ledger Wallet
The first step to purchase your ledger wallet is to visit the online store. Click our partner banner above to purchase your Ledger Nano X!
From my personal experience: I purchased my Nano X for CA$159 including HST and free shipping on December 26th (I was waiting for a boxing day sale, but sadly nothing). After my order was placed, I did not receive an order confirmation to my email right away - this threw me off as I thought I misspelt my email address. I contacted support and they quickly replied and assured me my order went through. I received my package from DHL 3 days later shipping with no additional charges. Just a heads-up though: According to their website, the Ledger Nano X is made and shipped from their factory in France and customs duties apply to orders shipped outside of the European Union.
Ledger Unboxing

I just love unboxing new gadgets and I was feeling just as excited to unbox the The Ledger Nano X. The package came in a nice small 13cm x 8cm sealed package. You should always check the packaging to see if it has been tampered with and be aware of scams targeting Ledger customers (see the link our Pro Tips for an example)

Contents in the package:
1) 1x Ledger Nano X
2) 1x USB-C Charger Cable,
3) 1x Ledger Branded Keychain
4) 1x Cool Pack of Ledger Stickers
5) 3x BLANK Recovery Phrase Cards
6) 2x Instruction Booklets.
Setting Up Your Ledger
After you have unboxed your Ledger and verified there is no PIN and seed phrase set, you can start to set up your Ledger wallet. Setting up the Ledger may seem like a tedious task but I found it straight forward with clear instructions provided. Visiting the link provided in the package to ledger.com/start, the setup instructions are broken down to four steps.
Step 1 - Get Ledger Live to start setting up your device
Download the official desktop app or mobile version of the Ledger Live on the App Store for iOS or the Play Store for Android.
After launching the Ledger Live app, Click on Get Started, accept the terms of use, choose your device and click on Set up a new Nano X, this aligns us with the next step.
Step 2 - Choose a PIN code & write down your recovery phrase
The next step is to choose a 4-8 digit PIN on your device. The left button scrolls backwards through the selection while the right button (the swivel part is a button) scrolls forwards. Pressing both buttons validates your selection. If you need to erase a digit, scroll till you see the X icon and press both buttons to select. Select the check mark if you are done choosing your PIN and you will be asked to verify your chosen PIN.
Next the Ledger will generate a random 24 word recovery phrase. In a safe and secure location, record the random 24 words in the correct sequence and correct spelling on your recovery sheets provided. You will need to recite all 24 words back to the device by choosing between a selection of words to verify you got it correctly. THIS IS THE KEYS TO YOUR FUNDS, which is why it is important to get it correct and stored in a safe and secure place.
Step 3 - Install applications on your device
The next step is to connect your Nano to the application. For PC it is done through the USB cable and inputting your PIN on the device when promted. For mobile you need to pair your device with Bluetooth, the application will search for your Nano device and show you a code to verify you are connecting to the correct device. Once connected you can choose which network "application" to install on your device; this is like configuring a new network on a software wallet. The steps are similar for PC or mobile: On the menu, select Accounts and Add account, choose your crypto asset you want to add (BTC, ETH, etc), select your Nano Device, and it will prompt you to accept the transaction on your device. The crypto app will install on your device and you are ready to receive that crypto asset.
Step 4 - Add an account to manage your crypto
Step 4 is the same as step 3, continue this step for all other crypto you wish to manage on your Ledger. Once you install an application, you can add an account which will generate a public receiving address for that asset.
Using Your Ledger
To receive funds to secure on your device, on the Ledger Live app, click on Accounts and the crypto you wish to receive. Click on the Receive button and then your device will connect to your device and ask you to verify your receiving address. You can now send those assets from an exchange to your Ledger to manage.
To send funds out of your Ledger accounts, you can do so on the Live app on the Accounts page and click on the crypto you wish to send. Click on Manage and Send (visible if you have a balance), input the amount, and verify and sign the transaction on your Ledger device..
There is more to discover on your Ledger by exploring the Discover tab on the menu. You can purchase crypto directly to your Ledger or perform swaps and staking options, just be mindful of transaction fees when interacting with Live Apps. I recommend buying and transferring cryptos from one of our favorite exchanges to get the best possible spreads and avoid any credit card fees.
